Description

Very nice carte view identified as Lieutenant Samuel Allshouse of Illinois. Working as a carpenter when war broke out, Allshouse enlisted as a private with Company D of the 12th Illinois Volunteer Infantry in May, 1861. A 3 month regiment, he would serve until that August when the men were mustered out of service. The following month he would be commissioned a 1st lieutenant of Company M, 4th Illinois Cavalry. Samuel would retain that rank for the next 3 years before mustering out of service in November, 1864. The regiment would see fighting at Fort Donelson, Shiloh and in movements against Corinth. Following Corinth they would take part in various guard duties before being ordered to Vicksburg where the regiment would remain until the expiration of their term of service. Very nice period ink inscription by Samuel across the front bottom reading “Yours Truly Lieut. Samuel Allshouse Co. M. 4th Ill. Cavalry”. Clipped corners on this one otherwise a very nice carte view. No back mark.
