Description

Quarter plate tintype tentatively identified as 1st sergeant Samuel H. Dearborn of the 11th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. Samuel stands here with his hand resting on his hip and dressed in his infantry frock. His 1st sergeants rank visible on the sleeve and tinted a slight shade of blue. His cap is worn with the classic New Hampshire hat brass pinned to the top “N.H.V” the numeral “11” and his company letter “I” all clearly visible. There were in fact two 1st sergeants in Company I. Samuel and fellow 1st sergeant, Charles Lane. Both men would be wounded in the December 13th assault on Marye’s Heights. Samuel was however 31 years of age at his enlistment while his younger counterpart was only 20 so I think it’s fairly safe to say we are in fact looking at a view of Samuel. The 1st sergeant would survive the wound and go on to serve the remainder of his term mustering out in June 1865. This one does have small bit of crazing to it. All I have for this one is the mat. No case or preserver.
