Description
Wonderful ninth plate ambrotype in the octagon format of an unidentified member of the 34th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Known as the “Morton Rifles”, the regiment would be raised at Anderson, Indiana in September, 1861. They would be engaged during the fights at Island Number Ten, Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Vicksburg and Palmita Ranch. In all, the regiment would lose 243 men to disease and battle. This view shows the unknown subject dressed in the distinct jacket worn by the regiment. The dark shell jacket was trimmed with a light colored collar and matching light blue tape running down both sides of the nine-button front placket. Also, each side of the chest bears a tombeaux done in a single strand of light blue colored cord. Rarely seen uniform. I’ve only had maybe 2 or 3 of these over the years. Housed in a full thermoplastic case.
