Splendid little ninth plate ambrotype of a Federal infantry musician. Dressed in his musicians frock, he holds his cap in his lap with brass infantry insignia displaying an infantry horn along with the numeral “47” and Company letter “C”. Written behind the image is a notation reading “Jared Green Musician 47 Ohio Vol.”. There is no Jared Green that served in the 47th Ohio Infantry that I could find. In fact there was only one Jared green from Ohio that served during the war and it is definitely not this guy. If this in fact the 47th Ohio Infantry, then our subject shown here would be 17 year old William Backhaus who would muster as a musician with Company C during the early summer of 1861. William would be the only possible match and this individual is certainly of the right age. Housed in a half leatherette case. Sharp little image!
