Description
Small soldier prayer book carried by Private Allen Moultroup of the 12th Vermont Volunteer Infantry. These were handed out by the Protestant Episcopal Book Society to troops during the war. These were pocket size for ease in carrying by the troops. Moultroup has stenciled his name inside both the front and back cover. He has also penciled his name inside the front cover with a small amount of other writing which is to faint for me to make out. Private Moultroup would muster with Company I in October, 1862. In January, 1863, the regiment would move to Wolf Run Shoals, Virginia for the purpose of guarding the fords of the Occoquan River and picketing the outer defenses of Washington. It was while here that Moultroup would fall ill with disease. It would claim his life on March 15, 1863. One can see that he obviously carried this with him through the rain and hard service of war. The binding is solid on this example with all pages intact. Very neat little piece.
