Very nice view of Captain John Hebrew of the 99th Pennsylvania Infantry. Working as a bookkeeper when war began, he would enlist at Philadelphia in August, 1861 as sergeant with Company G of the 99th Pennsylvania Infantry. Commissioned as 1st lieutenant in February, 1862, John was detailed to the Signal Corps in March 1862 and assigned to the First Army Corps, Army of the Potomac. On 4 September 1862 he was at Fairfax Seminary, VA but by 10 September he was on the march in Maryland, at Barnesville, with Captain Fisher. On the 13th he was on South Mountain in sight of Frederick, and on 18 September he was on the battlefield of Antietam before being sent to Sugarloaf Mountain on the 20th. Promoted to Captain of Company C on December 1st, 1862, he was at Fredericksburg, VA later that month and helped direct artillery fire there. John would be discharged on a Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability in September of 1864 due to the effects received life on the campaign. This view shows John sporting a McDowell pattern cap and gloved hands gripping his sword. A period pencil inscription across the front bottom reads, “Yours Truly Jno A. Hebrew 1st Lieut. 99th Reg. Signal Corps”. Back marked by Brady.
