Carte view identified as Captain William Ramage of the hard fighting 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. William would initially muster as a private in September of 1861. Over the next couple of years he would receive promotions to corporal, sergeant, 1st sergeant and 1st lieutenant by May of 1863. In September of that year William would take a commission as captain, transferring from Company G to Company D. He would continue to serve until his discharge in July, 1865. William is shown here wearing the rank of lieutenant and holding his chasseur cap in his hand. The 7th New Jersey would go on to earn an admirable service record, seeing action in some 50 engagements. This view is signed on the reverse in William’s hand reading “Yours Truly Wm. Ramage Capt. 7th N.J.V”. Back marked out of Paterson, New Jersey.
