Carte view of Joseph Culver of Iowa. Joseph would muster with the 34th Iowa in October, 1862 as a private in Company I. He would receive a promotion to 4th sergeant in March, 1863 but would be reduced in rank back to private in October, 1864. This regiment would suffer severely from both a measles epidemic and small pox epidemic. Their time would be spent guarding prisoners and taking part in expeditions throughout Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and a few others. This view is housed in the original albumen sleeve with a pencil identification written across the top. Nice New Orleans back mark on this one where the regiment arrived in late January, 1865. Joseph would finally be mustered out in August, 1865 at Houston, Texas.
