Carte view of Colonel James Coates of the 11th Illinois Infantry. Coates became a captain in the 11th Illinois in July, 1861. He would fight at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Riggins Hill and in the Vicksburg Campaign. James rose in rank to major and lieut. colonel before being promoted colonel after the regiment’s commander was killed at Vicksburg in 1863. He led an expedition up the Yazoo River which resulted in the Battle of Yazoo City in March 1864 and led a brigade in the Yazoo City Expedition as well as the Mobile Campaign. In March, 0f 1865 he would receive a brevet to brigadier general. No back mark on this one.
