Description

Very nice carte view of future colonel of the 83rd New York Volunteer Infantry, John Hendrickson. His military career would begin with a commission to 1st lieutenant of Company G with the 83rd in late May, 1861. Two months later he would be promoted to captain. His promotion to major would come in October of the following year and then to lieutenant colonel just a month later. In January, 1863 he would receive his final promotion to full colonel. Fighting along side as well as leading the men of the 83rd, he would fight at Sandy Hook, Cedar Mountain, Rappahannock Station, Manassas, South Mountain, Antietam and his final fight at Fredericksburg. It was here on December 13th that he would be severely wounded in the right leg which would require the amputation of the limb. He would be sent to the Army Square Hospital in D.C. to recover from the wound spending considerable time there eventually being discharged for wounds 8 months later. Immediately following his discharge he would return to service with a commission to major with the 13th Veteran Reserve Corps in August, 1863. A promotion once more to colonel would come two months later. He would receive a brevet to brigadier general in March, 1865 before his final discharge in June, 1866. This view dates to his time serving with the VRC. Interesting to note, rather than wearing colonel shoulder boards he simply wears an eagle on either shoulder. This one is back marked by Joslyn of Gallops Island located in Boston Harbor where the 13th VRC was garrisoned. Several other 13th VRC images are known to be back marked from the same location. Very nice and rare view.
