Vignette carte view identified as Corporal Alexander Peterson of the 16th Illinois Infantry. A Swedish immigrant, Peterson would muster with Company F in May, 1861. Over the next 3 years, Alexander would fight in no less than 13 major engagements beginning with the Battle of Monroe Station in July, 1861. He would see action in such places as New Madrid, Island No. 10, Corinth, Nashville, Kennesaw Mountain and a good many more. It would culminate with the Battle of Vining Station along the Chattahoochee River in July, 1864. Alexander would be killed in action during the engagement on the 17th of July. This same pose of Peterson can be found on the HDS.  Back marked out of Pleasant, Iowa.
