Carte view identified as Corporal William F. Smith of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry. William would muster as a corporal with “I” Company in December, 1863. He would serve as acting orderly sergeant as well as sergeant major before receiving a promotion to 2nd lieutenant in January, 1864. Four months later he would be wounded and captured at Ashland, Virginia. Upon his return he would be promoted to 1st lieutenant during the winter of 1864. His final discharge would come in June, 1865. A pencil id across the front bottom reads, “W. F. Smith Comp I 1st Mass Cavalry”. No back mark on this one and there is a very slight horizontal crease near the center.
