Daniel Halbert Possible 6th Michigan Infantry

Item No. HA80092 Category

Pre-war ambrotype of what is most likely a militia soldier. This has a period pencil inscription behind the image which reads “Capt Dan Halbert”. There is only one Dan Halbert that served during the war and that was a young man that served with the 6th Michigan Infantry.  He served his entire 4 years as a private. Whether or not this is in fact him I cannot say. Michigan did issue grey uniforms such as the one this individual is wearing early in the war. A grey cap is also worn with “US” insignia pinned to the front as well as a two-piece militia style waist belt. Housed in a full leatherette case with a split spine.
