Discharge Certificate Joseph P. Allen 8th Iowa Volunteer Infantry

Item No. AR29705 Category

Discharge certificate for Joseph P. Allen, formerly of Indiana. Joseph would muster with Company K of the 8th Iowa on September 11, 1861. These guys would be decimated at Shiloh with the majority of the regiment captured there. Some of the men that escaped the slaughter were consolidated into the “Union Brigade” which served as an individual regiment. At some point he transferred into the 2nd Battalion Veteran Reserve Corps. Whether it was due to a wound or sickness I do not know. This discharge is for his service with the VRC. Dated September 20, 1864. This is one of the nicer condition discharges I have seen.
