Carte view of a Federal infantryman. This one came out of an album which had a partial id written on the page reading “S.L.M. Died in a rebel prison”. One possibility is that this is Samuel L. Mayo of the 118th New York Volunteer Infantry. Wounded at Drewry’s Bluff, he was captured and sent to a Richmond prison where he succumbed to his wounds. This view is back marked out of Washington where the 118th initially served in defense of the Capitol. There are a handful of other men that served with those initials but they can be excluded for various reasons. Could use further research.
