Description

Carte view of an unknown Federal officer photographer in the Cincinnati studio of African American photographer J. P. Ball. Standing pose of this officer. The reverse bears two period inscriptions. “Rachel A Higgins from her friend Charlie”. Along the other side the inscription reads, “To Charlie P. Yarmann from his friend J. M. Green”. Unfortunately I have no been able to identify this officer. Ball would be one of the few African American photographers to work during the period and his work became very acclaimed, photographing some of the biggest names of the time including Frederick Douglas. This one is blind stamped in the bottom left corner, “J. P. Ball”.
