Post war full plate tintype identified as Major R. T. Johnston of the 7th Alabama Cavalry. I could not locate much information on Johnston. He would be commissioned captain of Company I in July, 1863. The first year of their enlistment would be spent serving along the Pensacola Bay area. During the fall of 1864 they would join with General Forrest at Corinth taking part in several raids as Hood moved towards Nashville. They would also take part in the last fighting of the war at Gainesville on May 14, 1865. I could not locate Johnston’s discharge date or whether he was ever actually promoted to major. Mounted in it’s original frame it measures 14″ x 16″ overall. An old period tag is affixed to the plate reading “Major R. T. Johnston Confederacy Ala 1860 – 1864”. This one could use further research.
