A well publicized image named, “The Empty Sleeve”.   Civil War veteran, Henry Meacham, of the 32nd Massachusetts Infantry is portrayed here in this post war view with his daughter on his lap, holding the “empty sleeve”. Meacham was a carriage maker when he enlisted in 1863 as a private in the 32nd Mass. The following June he would be severely wounded in the right arm at Petersburg, Va., which subsequently resulted in the amputation of the arm. He was discharged from service at Alexandria, Va. on August, 25, 1864. Following the war, these were sold to raise funds for Henry. Back marked out of Worchester, Massachusetts.
