Description

Post war “Portfolio of Personal Military and Civil History” for Jeremiah Penrod of the 21st Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. Dedicated to his wife Mary and presented to his children on January 10th, 1903. Inside the front cover sits a post war carte view of Jeremiah dressed in civilian clothes. Jeremiah would muster with Company F of the 21st Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry in February, 1864 after the regiment was authorized for reorganization. Following his enlistment the regiment would be sent to Washington, dismounted and then armed and equipped as an infantry unit before joining the Army of the Potomac at Cold Harbor. Assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps they would see extensive action. Cold Harbor, Weldon Railroad, Petersburg, Mine Explosion, Preble Farm, Popular Springs Church and several other now notorious battles. In October of 1864 they moved to City Point where they were remounted and equipped as a cavalry regiment once more. Serving as a cavalry unit they would fight at Hatcher’s Run, Boydton Road, Dinwiddie Court House, Five Forks and a number more leading up to the Appomattox Campaign. Following Lee’s surrender they would move to Petersburg where they would perform guard and provost duty until being mustered out of service in June, 1865. Inside the back cover is a second carte view of Jeremiah in his infantry uniform following the regiments re-designation as an infantry unit in May, 1864. The portfolio itself has for the most been left blank inside with the exception of a detailed account of Jeremiah’s service. Jeremiah would have a brother that would serve in the 93rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. This does come with full service records.
