Description
Ninth pate tintype identified as Julius Esping of Chicago, Illinois. Julius is shown here, seated and dressed in an Illinois state jacket with corporal’s chevrons and cradling a militia sword. Mustering with “C” company in in March, 1864, he would be discharged for a disability just days before the wars end on April 6th. This one has an old note glued to the reverse reading “Julius Esping June 24, a young man who lived in Warren, Ill and was employed by father. He was a volunteer in the Civil War 1860- was killed in action. He was a Swede”. Julius was in fact from Sweden as noted on his enlistment, however he obviously was not killed during the war. It does appear that by September of 1865, Julius would be deceased as his wife filed for a pension. This one does have some crazing to the emulsion service. Housed in a full leatherette case.
