Description

Carte view of 2nd lieutenant George Bellows of the 6th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. Bellows would muster as a corporal with Company A in August, 1861. The following May, he would be promoted to sergeant, and then to his final rank of 2nd lieutenant in June of 1864. The regiment would fight in nearly a dozen major engagements over their tenure, beginning with Fort Pulaski in April, 1862. Of the battles in which the regiment was engaged, Bellows would be wounded in 20% of them. First at Fort Wagner in July of 1863, and then again at Deep Bottom Run on August 16, 1864. The latter wounding would put an end to his military career. George would be discharged for wounds received in November, 1864. This view shows bellows wearing his rank of 2nd lieutenant which he would end the war with. No back mark on this one.
