Description
Wonderful carte view identified as Lieutenant Isaac D. Paull of the 39th Massachusetts Infantry, 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac. Paull, a 30-year-old native of Taunton, Massachusetts, was mortally wounded in action at Laurel Hill, Virginia on May 8, 1864, the first day of the series of battles at Spotsylvania Courthouse. Paull was a Mason, and his body could not be recovered after his wounding. An Alabama surgeon who was also a Mason had him buried on the field, and later relocated him to a grave near the Battlefield with three Confederate soldiers. After the war, the doctor wrote to Paull’s family and informed them of the whereabouts of his remains. A fellow Mason from Massachusetts was sent to retrieve his body, and after it was exhumed, and while it was being examined, the fragments of the minie ball that killed Paull fell to the floor. An article from CWTI from April 2002 tells his story more fully, and is included with the CDV. The CDV being sold is a slight variant of the one shown in the CWT article. Exceptional carte with an exceptional story
