Splendid carte view of Albert F. Alden of Waltham, Massachusetts. At a mere 16 years of age, Albert would muster as a musician with “I” company of the 24th Massachusetts in September, 1861. He would serve as drummer for the regiment through the four years of hard fighting which the regiment endured. They would fight in no less than 15 engagements, from the Carolina’s through Florida and Virginia. In January of 1864, Albert would re-enlist and take a short furlough before returning to the regiment to continue his role as drummer. He would serve in that role until his discharge in January, 1866. Surprisingly, Albert would be present for duty for his entire term, less his furlough for re-enlistment. Quite a feat for serving 5 years. This view shows Albert photographed dressed in his musicians jacket and wearing his veterans stripes. Most likely taken during his time home on furlough in 1864. A second photo of Albert can be found on the HDS where is dressed in this same jacket and displaying the Chasseur cap which he wears here. Back marked out of South Weymouth, Massachusetts. This comes with a small bit of paper work on Albert as well.
