Superb and rare outdoor view of the famous Ondawa Hotel located in Salem, New York. The hotel can be seen in clear view with the words “ONDAWA HOUSE” painted across the upper level of the hotel. I have seen another view of this exact scene which was dated 1864. American flags can be scene lining the street with all of the buildings decorated in ribbon’s, streamers and all sorts of decorations. The town could be decorated in celebration of the Fourth of July or possibly Lincoln’s re-election of 1864. A number of the windows of the hotel and clearly wide open, so I’m a little skeptical this was taken following Lincoln’s election in November. It gets a bit chilly in New York about that time of year. A number of the towns citizens can be seen standing about, as well as a horse and carriage and a large puddle in the middle of the street. Really neat view of this famous hotel which is still standing to this day! Back marked by the well known Hurd’s Gallery.
