Description

This is an early war, clear glass ambrotype with the black japanned tin nestled in behind the ambrotype. This infantryman is seated in front of a large US flag which graces the wall in back. Dressed in his infantry frock, he wears the rank of corporal. His Hardee hat is tucked under his arm with a light blue hat cord wrapped around the base of the hat as well as brass infantry insignia, an ostrich plume and his company letter “G”. A cartridge box is worn over the shoulder as well as a US waist belt and cap box. Triple armed, his bayonet rests on the hip seated in the scabbard while a small knife is attached to the belt and a 22 cal. pocket pistol is tucked into the belt. This is very possibly a member of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry based on other known images similarly posed and photographed in this studio. The 1st Minnesota would amass quite an impressive record during the war, fighting in some of the wars most notorious battles. This one comes housed in a half leatherette case.
