Description
Beautifully composed sixth plate tintype of what appears to be a Federal artilleryman. Seated pose of this soldier with legs crossed. Dressed in a service jacket, the trim has been tinted yellow for cavalry. I have doubts that he was in fact a cavalryman as opposed to an artilleryman. He is not wearing re-enforced trousers that we would expect to see on a cavalryman and he is also armed with a M1840 light artillery saber. Just in general he does not give the appearance of a cavalryman to me. Presumably a mistake by the artist who did the exceptional tinting job to this image. Regardless, this image is a 10 out of 10 as far as condition and composition is concerned. He wears an upside down M1851 eagle waist belt with a Smith & Wesson Model 1 revolver tucked into the waist of the belt. The clarity of this image is flawless and the artist who colored the image was exceptionally skilled at his trade. Every part of this image has been tinted. From his blue trousers, to the gold of the pommel of the sword and the flesh color of his hands and face. Just an all around magnificent image. Housed in a full leatherette case.
