Description

Rare carte view of a member of one of the war’s most illusive and sought after units, the 1st USSS Berdan’s Sharpshooters! Aaron Young Gregory would muster with Company B of the famed unit in late August, 1861, following the organization of the company in Albany, New York. That September, the unit would move to Washington where they were assigned to the defenses of the city. It was while here that Aaron would fall ill with measles. While the young man battled with measles, he would also fall ill with typhoid fever. Despite being deathly ill he would follow the regiment to Yorktown. He would take no part in the siege however. Aaron would be discharged for a disability on April 3rd and return home. He would never recover from the debilitating disease. It would claim his life in his home on May 25th, 1862. This view shows Aaron dressed in his dark green sharpshooters frock and cap. The photographer has blacked out the buttons indicating the rubber Goodyear buttons which were worn on the coat by members of the regiment. A period ink inscription on the reverse reads “A. Y. Gregory Born July 18th, 1848. Died May 25th, 1862″. While Aarons service in the elite unit was brief, USSS images are very hard to come by. This does come with some photo copies of the report written by the doctor that examined him, his discharge and some pension reports filed by Aarons father. Some slight knicks to the surface near his eye. No back mark on this one.
