Description
Carte view identified as Frank Walcott of the 117th New York Infantry. The Whitestown, New York native would muster with “D” Company on November 1, 1862. He would be promoted to sergeant major in April, 1863 but his service would end before the year was out. Frank would be discharged for a disability in October, 1863. While this view is not back marked, it was taken in Washington as evidenced by the back drop. The regiment would be stationed there in the Defense of Washington during the fall of 1862 and early spring of 1863 before being ordered to Suffolk, Virginia in April. Frank is shown here wearing his sergeants chevrons and leaning on a M1840 NCO sword. The front of his cap bears the numerals “117”. A faint pencil inscription across the front bottom merely reads “Frank”. The reverse of the card is inscribed “Frank H. Walcott ??? Lake ??? cousin”. This one does have some wear to it with a diagonal crease in the lower left hand corner.
