Description
Sixth plate melainotype of a Federal cavalry bugler. Standing view of this slender bugler dressed in his musicians uniform with herringbone trim across the breast. A M1851 eagle waist belt is worn from which his cavalry saber hangs. His bugle is held in hand with the lanyard draped around his neck and tassels hanging from the bugle. Sporting this wonderful Hardee hat with cavalry insignia pinned to the front along with his company letter E. While this image is not identified it is very reminiscent of several 3rd Iowa Cavalry images I have handled over the years. A view of bugler Perry Newell of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry is attached for comparison. While it is not conclusive proof that this is a member of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry, I would say that it is a very valid possibility. Housed in a very nice and scarce “Highland Chief” full thermoplastic case. One small chip missing at the latch, otherwise a near mint case.
