Description
Nice carte view of enlisted sailor Thomas Edmondson who would serve on board the U.S.S. Franklin. Full standing view of Edmondson dressed in his blue Navy jumper. His Navy cap rests on the pedestal beside him with “FRANKLIN” visible along the front. The U.S.S Franklin was originally launched in September, 1864 but was not commissioned until June, 1867. She would serve as the flagship for Admiral David Farragut’s European Squadron in both 1867 and 1869 but was later decommissioned in 1871. This view most likely dates to their 1867 excursion as it is back marked out of Napoli, Italy. Period ink inscription on the reverse reads “Thos Edmondson”.
