Nice example of a smooth side, M1858 canteen. This one definitely saw some use. Still retains the original butternut jean wool cover although somewhat tattered. Also retaining the original cloth sling which the soldier modified by tying to the loops on either side of the canteen. You can see where it appears the sling wore through and broke and so the soldier just tied it to the loops rather than running it down through the bottom loop. The sling is also knotted to shorten it’s length which was generally done. Either side of the canteen is dented which is generally encountered due to use. It is missing the stopper and chain. A couple of “X”s are carved into the spout. Getting hard to find these with the wool cover and sling still intact.
