Description
Very nice carte view identified as Henry B. Evans of the 23rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. A former mariner, Henry would trade in his sea legs for a Federal infantry frock and soldiering about on dry land rather than the sea. Mustering in to Company A late in September, 1861 he may have wished by wars end that he had chose the navy instead. The regiment would see plenty of heavy fighting. New Berne, Kinston, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and a number more. Henry would number among the men captured on board the steamer “Fawn” early in September, 1864. He would serve 2 months in captivity before being exchanged that December. Returning to his regiment, Henry would serve up until the end of his term in June, 1865. Unique red border on this view. A small amount of research paperwork accompanies this view.
