Vignette carte view identified as lieutenant William Bain of the 16th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. William would initially begin his service as a corporal in May, 1861. In December, 1863 he would re-enlist as a veteran volunteer and be promoted to sergeant. Late in the war he would be promoted to 2nd lieutenant but was never officially mustered with that rank as he was discharged prior to the promotion being finalized. The 16th would see their first action during the Siege of Nashville. They would go on to fight at Resaca, Atlanta, Kennesaw Mountain andtake part in Sherman’s March to the Sea before seeing their last fight at Bentonville. All told they would lose a 170 during the war. William would be discharged in May, 1865. This view was once part of the personal cdv album of James Cahill who served as Lieutenant Colonel for the regiment. While this image is not identified on the card itself, a second view of Bain is listed on the HDS. Back marked out of William’s home town of Macomb, Illinois.
