Description
Carte view identified as Darwin Sanford of the 193rd New York Infantry. Entering the war late, Darwin would muster as a private at a mere 17 years of age, a month prior to the war’s end. A week after his enlistment, Darwin would be promoted to 1st sergeant. The regiment would join the Army of the Shenandoah and later moved to the District of West Virginia for occupation duty, where it would spend the majority of it’s service. This view bears a period notation across the front reading, “Uncle Darwin E. Sanford”. Darwin, along with the remainder of the regiment, would be discharged in January, 1866. Back marked out of Cumberland, Maryland.
