Description
Very nice late war view of Sergeant George H. Gray of the 48th Wisconsin Infantry. Near full standing view of George dressed in his infantry frock sporting sergeant’s rank. George would muster with “E” Company late in February, 1865. He would serve until December of that year when he was discharged on the 30th. The regiment would leave the state in March 1865 for St. Louis, Missouri, and later moved to operations and post duties in Kansas. There they would guard mail routes, railroad lines, and government trains against Native American threats on the frontier. This one is back marked out of Milwaukee with a cancelled tax stamp. A period pencil id on the reverse reads, “G. H. Gray”.
