Description
Superb sixth plate tintype of a Federal bugler with an unknown cavalry regiment. Dressed in this service jacket trimmed with a unique, zig-zag pattern across the breast and three rows of buttons. He also sports this wonderful M1855 pattern Hardee hat with brass cavalry insignia pinned to the front along with a small bugle. That could either be meant to indicate his role as a bugler, but it is generally associated with mounted infantry. Unique rank insignia is also worn which consists of a 1st sergeants rank with a single arching band over the top. This could be to indicate his role as a chief bugler, however the exact rank is not clear. This guy is the poster child for non-regulation! Definitely an interesting as well as confusing ensemble of insignia. This one is housed in a half case.
