Description
Very nice dead letter carte view of a Federal cavalryman. Nice studio pose of this soldier standing next to a small pedestal with a bowl of fruit displayed. Dressed in his cavalry uniform he stands double armed with a holstered revolver and his cavalry saber. This example displays the classic dead letter characteristics including the red ink identification number in the lower left hand corner and the two clip marks from where the view was previously pinned to the dead letter board. While this subject is not identified, he without a doubt a member of the 11th New York Cavalry. Back marked by J. L. Oeffler of Staten Island, where the 11th New York Cavalry was raised. Oeffler held a monopoly on the island as it’s sole photographer and photographed many of the members of the 11th New York. Don’t see these dead letter cdv’s too often. Nice example.
