Description

Quarter plate tintype of a Federal cavalryman. Nice up close portrait of this trooper. Sporting a sack coat, which the photographer has taken the liberty to add the yellow trim to indicate his branch of service. Typically we do not see cavalrymen dressed in sack coats. His cap is embroidered with cavalry insignia sewn to the front along with the numeral “1” to indicate his regiment. This back drop is known to have been in the Fredericksburg area and is directly associated with the Iron Brigade. Brigaded along side the Iron Brigade were the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry. This image has been tentatively identified as Oliver Adams who would serve as the bugler for the 1st Rhode Island regiment. During the spring of 1863, he would be on detached service at Dumfries, Virginia which may account for the use of the sack coat rather than your typical cavalry uniform. Nice image housed in a full leatherette case.
