Description
Beautiful and seldom seen, 7th Corps badge identified to Smith L. Cogswell of the 81th Illinois Infantry. Cogswell would muster with “E” Company as a 1st sergeant just a month prior to war’s end. He would serve until the end of the year when he was discharged from the service. This wonderful and rare 7th Corps badge has been cut from a silver quarter, with the front of the quarter sanded smooth and engraved with Cogswell’s information. The face of the badge read, “S. L. Cogswell 1st Sergt. 18th Ill. Inf. Vol.’. The center of the star is engraved with a large letter “E” indicating his company. The reverse of the quarter is still present along with the original pin. Really outstanding badge!
