Description

Carte view with a rock solid id to the 107th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. 1st sergeant Thomas Wheeler of Company C. Thomas would muster with the regiment as a 1st sergeant in January, 1862. The regiment would get a rapid introduction into what the next 3 years would bring with the Cedar Mountain Campaign in August of that year. Over the next 6 months, the regiment would take part in Pope’s campaign into Northern Virginia, fighting at Cedar Mountain, 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. The following year would not start well for the regiment as they, along with many others, suffered through Burnside’s “Mud March” in January. In May they would fight at Chancellorsville, and in July on the field of Gettysburg taking 165 casualties of the 255 men brought to the field. They would end the year taking part in the Bristoe and Mine Run Campaigns. Thomas would re-enlist in February of 1864, returning to the regiment in May. He would return the regiment in time of the Battle of North Anna River. The new year would bring a slew of new battles. Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor, Bethesda Church, White Oak Swamp, Petersburg, Weldon railroad and Boydton Plank Road. 1865 would start the Appomattox Campaign and see the surrender of Lee’s Army. Thomas would continue to serve until July, when he would be mustered out of service. This view shows the NCO dressed in his jacket with 1st sergeants rank applied to the sleeve and a silver id disc pinned to the breast of the coat. He purposely displays the top of his cap for the camera and the brass which is pinned on it which reads “C 107 PVV”. A period ink id on the reverse reads “Tom Wheeler”, leaving no doubt to the id. Super nice image of one of Pennsylvania’s hard fought regiments.
