Description
Quarter plate tintype tentatively identified as a member of the 1st Vermont Cavalry. Seated pose resting on a small barrel and dressed in a four button sack coat, heavy trousers and cavalry boots. This fellow has been in the field a while. There are several holes visible in his sack coat, so he has certainly seen some service. He is posed here in front of what is known as the Culpepper back drop which was used during the winter of 1863/64 in the vicinity of Culpepper, Virginia. The attribution to the 1st Vermont Cavalry comes from a second, nearly identical image, which was published in the May-June, 1998 issue of Military Images Magazine on page 39. In that view, the cavalryman sits on the same barrel, dressed in identical attire right down to the flipped up cap on the visor. This one comes housed in a half case which is a little beat up. Seldom seen regiment however.
