Description
This is an early 20th Century re-strike of the George Washington style ID disc. Some time after 1900, a man by the name of Thomas Elder was able to acquire the original dies for these George Washington ID disc’s. The idea was to mint these id tags for use during World War I. Unfortunately for Thomas, US troops heading to war were already issued id tags by the US Government resulting in the idea falling flat. These are easily recognized by the addition of word “NAME” at the top of the disc which Thomas had added. While these are not often found, they do pop up from time to time. This example was minted in brass, although they were also minted in sterling silver, aluminum, silver plate, and bronze.
