Post war cabinet card view of assistant surgeon William Andrew Dinwiddie of Iowa City, Iowa. William would muster as a private with “B” Company of the 40th Iowa Infantry in October, 1862. Days later he would be promoted to hospital steward, a role he would fulfill until the following May. That month he would be discharged for a promotion to assistant surgeon and transferred into the 22nd Iowa Infantry. He would remain with the 22nd Iowa serving as the assistant surgeon until mid February of 1865 when he would resign his commission. Three months later he would take a commission as an assistant surgeon with the 39th Iowa Infantry, although due to the close of the war, he never mustered. His service would not end there however. He would have subsequent service in the U.S. Army, serving until July, 1886. This view dates to his post war service with the 2nd U.S. Cavalry. Seated wearing his kepi, cavalry insignia is pinned to the front along with the numeral “2”. A ink signature across the bottom front reads , “Very truly Wm. A Dinwiddie 2nd U.S. Cavalry”. No back mark on this one.
