Description

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1829 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served forty years in the United States Army. At the beginning of the Civil War he was serving as Major of the 3rd United States Regular Infantry. He was promoted first to Lieutenant Colonel of the 9th United States Regular Infantry on October 9, 1861, then to Colonel of the 16th United States Regular Infantry on April 20, 1864. Brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for “faithful and meritorious services during the war”, he retired as a Colonel in 1869. This example has a post war back mark out of Atlanta, Georgia where Caleb would serve from 1866 until his retirement in 1869.
