Carte view of Brevet Brigadier General Caleb Sibley. An 1829 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served forty years in the United States Army. At the beginning of the Civil War he was serving as Major of the 3rd United States Regular Infantry at Fort Macintosh, Texas. It was here that he would surrender his battalion to Confederate General Earl Van Dorn. Paroled shortly after, he would be promoted first to Lieutenant Colonel of the 9th United States Regular Infantry in San Francisco. In April of 1864, he would be promoted to Colonel of the 16th United States Regular Army and was appointed Superintendent of Regimental Recruiting Service at Fort Ontario, New York. He would remain there until wars end. Brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for “faithful and meritorious services during the war”, he retired as a Colonel in 1869. This one has a seldom seen back mark by Bradley & Rulofson of San Francisco from his time serving with the 9th Infantry. Slightly trimmed.
