Description
Sixth plate tintype of a Federal infantryman photographed at Camp Distribution. This back drop is similar to the Beaufort, South Carolina back drop with the Palmetto tree and camp scene, however I don’t imagine he’s going to need that great coat down in Beaufort. Camp Distribution operated out of Alexandria, Virginia beginning in January, 1864. It served as a way station for troops who were returning to their regiments following furloughs, periods of convalescence and former prisoners of war who had been paroled. This soldier stands dressed in his great coat, which has been tinted a light shade of blue and holding his musket at his side. Scratched into the back of the plate is a letter or letters which I cannot decipher, followed by the numeral 4 and the initials “W. J. G.”. Housed in a very nice full thermoplastic case.
