Description
Carte view identified as Captain Francis M. Smith of Massachusetts. Working as a carriage maker prior to the war, Francis would first muster with the 8th Massachusetts Infantry as a private in late April, 1861. A three month regiment, he would serve until discharged in August of that year. Francis would next must with the 48th Massachusetts Infantry in September, 1862. He would quickly receive promotions to 1st lieutenant as well as captain in less then 3 months. A 9 month regiment, their only engagement would come at Port Hudson. They would be heavily engaged here, suffering nearly 50 casualties. Francis himself would be counted among the wounded during the charge against the Confederate works on May 27th. Discharged from the 48th in September, 1863, he would next muster with the 59th Massachusetts Infantry the following month as a 2nd lieutenant. His earlier wounding would however plague the officer, and by August of 1864, Francis had been discharged for disability. I had previously sold a different view of Francis last year. This example is back marked out of Boston.
