Description

Very nice carte view of Captain George Harper of the 67th New York Infantry. Harper would muster as a corporal with the regiment in June of 1861. Over the next 3 years, he would receive 5 promotions, ending the war with the rank of captain. Promoted to sergeant on September 30, 1861 and 1st sergeant on the first day of 1862. After being wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines on May 31, 1862, Harper advanced to 2nd Lieutenant of Company C on June 2nd, 1st Lieutenant of Company E on Christmas Day and finally achieving the rank of Captain of Company I on November 10, 1863. Starting with the Peninsular Campaign of 1862, the regiment would be engaged in the majority of the battles fought throughout the campaign. Yorktown, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Richmond and Malvern Hill. George would be wounded during the fight at Seven Pines, taking a lengthy recovery. They would be in reserve at Antietam but would fight at Fredericksburg in December. Slogging through the “Mud March” in January of 1863, they would next fight through much of the Chancellorsville Campaign. Both Maryes Heights and Salem Heights which then would lead up to the infamous battle of Gettysburg where the regiment would fight from Culp’s Hill. They would end the year fighting in both the Bristoe and Mine Run Campaign’s. After a short stint serving as guards at Johnson’s Island from January to April, 1864, they would return to the front lines in time to take part in the Battle of the Wilderness. It was followed by non-stop combat. Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. His final discharge would come in July, 1864. Back marked out of Brooklyn with a tax stamp, George most likely sat for this view at the time of his discharge.
