Description
Carte view identified as Captain Harmon Merriman of the 177th New York Infantry. Harmon would be commissioned captain of “H” Company of the 177th New York Infantry in October, 1862. A 9-month regiment, the 177th was principally engaged in the Siege of Port Hudson, taking part in the general assault on May 27th. Harmon would be severely wounded during the assault. Loaded aboard a transport ship, Harmon began the lengthy trip home to New York. Two days out from New Orleans, Harmon would succumb to the effects of his wounding on June, 14th. Facing a lengthy journey home during peek summer heat, his body was committed to the sea to prevent his decomposition aboard the ship.
