Description
Beautiful signed carte view of Captain Joseph W. Denny of the 25th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. At the outbreak of war, Joseph would initially be commissioned a lieutenant in the 6th Massachusetts Infantry. A three month regiment, they would serve in the occupation of Baltimore before being mustered out of service in August, 1861. Two months later, he would take a commission as captain of “K” Company of the 25th Massachusetts Infantry. The regiment would sail for the coast in January,1862, as a part of the Burnside expedition to the coast of North Carolina. Landing nearly a month later, on the following day it was engaged in the Battle of Roanoke Island where it would suffer significant casualties. It would suffer further loss at New Berne of the 14th. From this point forward, the regiment would spend most of their time on guard duty in New Berne. Joseph would be appointed chief provost marshal of New Berne and all places within North Carolina that were under control of Federal forces. He would remain in that role until his discharge in October, 1864. The reverse of this carte bears a wonderful ink inscription written by Denny reading “Very truly yours J. W. Denny Capt. & Chf. Pro. Mar. N.C. April 14, 1864″. Inscribed below to a “Capt. Wheeler”. This one is back marked out of New Berne as well.
